Founded in 2013, Young Musicians Unite revitalizes music programs one school at a time, giving students a voice through music. Working with our underserved communities, YMU provides solutions with high profiled educators and free comprehensive music programming. By collaborating with schools that have limited or no music programs, YMU will unite young musicians in the Wynwood and Overtown community and raise awareness about the importance of music education.
Since 2013, Young Musicians Unite (YMU) has been dedicated to providing free in-school and after school music programs to South Florida’s youth. Under the leadership of Sammy Gonzalez, YMU engages youth from at-risk communities with limited or non-existent music programs. Depending on their individual school, students who participate in YMU become members of a Classical Guitar ensemble, a Jazz ensemble, or a Student Rock Band. The YMU program ensures that students learn the fundamentals of music including theory, reading, songwriting, competition, and performance. Classes are led by qualified professional teachers, and aided by peer to peer mentors and visiting guest musicians. Without exception, all of the equipment, music, performance and teaching fees are waived. YMU have 85+ students currently enrolled in programming and have serviced 210+ students over the years.
Young Musicians Unite will be providing a free high intensity classical guitar camp. Via submissions, 30 students will be chosen to participate in this program and learn some of the top techniques in guitar playing. Over a week all students will receive 2 private lessons, participate in daily work shops, guitar ensemble classes, master classes, performances by some of Miami’s most talented players, and have full access to our teachers for questions and answers.
Students have access to high level classical guitar camps in every major US city except Miami. Through partnering with The Guitar Foundation & Allegro Music Young Musicians Unite is stepping up to make the difference.
Thank you to everyone for a successful show & amazing SOLD OUT show this Saturday at the Gleason Room and for helping us raise $57K. We will be adding an additional 6 teachers to the YMU team and expanding our programming from 85 to 140+ students. Looking forward to an even bigger and better 2017-2018 School Year!
On Saturday May, 20th YMU will be celebrating their 6th Annual Spring Concert in The Gleason Room at The Fillmore Theatre in Miami Beach. We are preparing an amazing night of performances by our talented young musicians. These students have been working hard all year to show off their accomplishments. We have performances ranging from a jazz combo, to a guitar ensemble, drum line, and 3 rock bands. The Spring Concert is YMU’s largest fundraiser of the year and is key to the continued growth of our organization.
